Uganda Update ...
We are looking to take a team back to Uganda in 2010
We have been developing our links with Uganda over the past 8 years with a number of aims in mind :
- Generosity and sacrificial living as a hallmark of the church
- Challenging our western, self-centred lifestyles, releasing potential
- Building kingdom community values – within and beyond the church
- Sean Dooley’s word about many people from Brookside going on overseas trips
- Giving and ministry to the poor as part of the DNA of the church in Reading
In the past 5 years we have taken around a dozen people from Brookside out to Uganda at different times, have raised over £15, 000 to fund projects including supporting over 70 orphans through education; providing goats, chickens, beans for growing; a grinding mill for crops to generate income; visiting dozens of schools to provide text books, & sports equipment; running numerous seminars for health workers and pastors, dental clinics for rural communities, physiotherapy clinics & seminars; distributing emergency food supplies, hundreds of mosquito nets and Bibles (both life-saving!); and worshipping with hundreds of Uganda Christians. It’s so good we want to do MORE!
So, in July 2010 we are planning to take another team out for 2 weeks
Who might be interested in coming?
Basically anyone who is fit and healthy and has a heart for serving others in a third world country.
We will need to put together a team with a range of skills – some are very general (such as the ability to work together as a team, speak in front of groups of people or interact with schoolchildren, put up with some discomfort in travelling on hot, dusty roads etc.) while others will be specialist (like nursing for instance). Quite often we can do more than we imagine, so if in doubt, please complete the Expression of Interest if you think you may be interested, or want to talk anything through regarding your potential involvement
What sort of things might we do in Uganda next year?
It partly depends on the range of people, skills and funds we have available, but first thoughts are:
- Schools visits -textbooks and sports equipment
|
- Bicycles for rural health workers
|
- Seminars for pastors and wives
|
- Bibles in the local language
