In Maiden Erlegh, the local secondary school, we’re involved in group and one-to-one mentoring programmes, working with young people as part of their alternative curriculum. We work with JAC in providing weekly small group sessions for young people right across the school, covering such issues as anger management, self esteem and emotional literacy. This type of work goes hand-in-hand with detached work outside of school time, as key ingredients in this process of relationship building. Also in Maiden Erlegh, we run the school Christian Union, which provides a helpful context for a big group of Christian young people and their friends to gather for encouragement and teaching at the end of the school day. This is all in addition to being involved in regularly taking school assemblies, and regular opportunities to input into the curriculum in RE and PSE lessons. We also provide a team to help run the school ASDAN group, another branch of the schools alternative curriculum.
This ongoing partnership with the school has led to opportunities to input into the school pastoral care group, representing both the pupils in school and the local church community. We continue to be privileged to work alongside the school in this area.
Our work with young people in school is an integral part of us being church and serving in the community. In our efforts to effectively engage and disciple young people, working with local schools is essential.
